Usually when you talk about facing a top-ranked Kentucky team, you’re talking about a basketball game. However, this weekend the 10th-ranked Ole Miss baseball team, which just took two of three games from the top-ranked Florida Gators, will head to Lexington to take on the Kentucky Wildcats, who are ranked as high as No. 1 in Collegiate Baseball, for a three-game series.

In 2010, Brett Huber was a redshirt freshman for the Diamond Rebels. In 2010, he became a dominant closer for Ole Miss with 12 saves and a 3.54 earned run average in 48.1 innings. In 2010, he was named second team All-SEC, in addition to being named to the All-Freshman team. In 2010, he was named a Freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball, Baseball America and NCBWA. 

In 2012, Huber wants to prove he can be that dominant again.

Top-five recruting class to be counted on early

The 2011 recruiting class, ranked third nationally by Collegiate Baseball and fifth nationally by Baseball America, is finishing up their first fall practice that lasted six weeks and included the Red-Blue scrimmage October 15, 17 other intra-squad scrimmages and this week’s Red-Blue World Series.

Earlier this month, six Ole Miss players were selected in the Major League Baseball First Year Player draft, including the entire weekend rotation.

Friday night starter Matt Crouse, a 24th-round pick of the Detroit Tigers, and Sunday night starter Austin Wright, an 8th-round pick of the Philadelphia Phillies, now pitch in the New York — Penn League (Short-Season A). Saturday night starter David Goforth, taken in seventh round by the Milwaukee Brewers, has not yet signed a professional contract, but is expected to do so before the Aug. 15 deadline.

When asked about his conversation with Ole Miss and the Boston Red Sox and the latest on his decision to attend college or play professional baseball, Senquez Golson simply said, “I think I will report to Oxford July 1.”

Golson, a two-sport standout from Pascagoula, was taken in the eighth round (No. 262 overall) of the Major League Baseball First Year Player draft last week.

Last year, left-handed pitcher Drew Pomeranz, now in the Cleveland Indians organization, was selected with the fifth overall pick, making him the highest drafted player in Ole Miss baseball history. 

Right-handed pitcher Aaron Barrett (Washington Nationals) and outfielder Tim Ferguson (Kansas City Royals) followed on the draft’s second day, while current Rebels David Goforth and Matt Tracy were drafted on the draft’s third day.
