Seven years ago Randell Broussard looked beyond his porch and saw apartments; today he sees only dark clouds and white-capped waves. The storm reached land with winds near 80 mph and threatens to flood the coasts of four states, including Mississippi, with storm surge and heavy rain.

Last week, Sardis Lake Marina was hit hard by a wind storm that caused the facility to close momentarily. 

The National Weather Service reported straight-line winds between 85 to 90 mph hit the area late last Wednesday afternoon through the early evening.

A new subdivision will bring small and inexpensive housing to Oxford.

The subdivision featuring “Katrina cottages” will be located on Highway 7 South near the intersection of South Lamar Boulevard. Katrina Hourin, assistant city planner, said she is familiar with these cottages and thinks Oxford will benefit from them.

“Since I’m from New Orleans, I have known personally about the cottages since shortly after the hurricane,” Hourin said.

On August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina devastated many cities on the Gulf coast in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida. We all remember what happened; New Orleans was nearly destroyed and the cities along the coast were basically wiped off the map.

The Oxford Planning Commission approved three new hotels, including a Hampton Inn East Conference Center during a meeting Monday.

 

The Oxford Planning Commission approved three new hotels, including a Hampton Inn East Conference Center during a meeting Monday.

 

The hotels are planned to begin construction within the year.
